Last week, President Trump delivered his first State of the Union address. The State of the Union presents an opportunity for presidents to address pressing concerns facing our country and to unite Americans in pursuit of common goals. Instead what we saw during the President’s speech was more of what we’ve seen over his entire first year in office – more divisiveness, more fear mongering, and more lies.

In his State of the Union speech, President Trump recounted what’s been a very good year for big corporations and the wealthy but a hard year for working Americans. During his first year in office, his signature policies were repeated attempts to take healthcare away from millions of working families followed by a tax cut for the rich and big corporations. The GOP tax cuts overwhelmingly benefit the wealthy, giving 80 percent of the benefits to the wealthiest 1 percent over the next decade.

President Trump and his team billed this address as a unifying speech, but you can’t bring people together by vilifying immigrants and equating them with criminals. Trump failed to offer any specifics on how he will help working families, and a year after announcing his infrastructure plan we still don’t know the details, although early outlines indicate it will be a gift to wealthy private developers at the expense of taxpayers.

What President Trump made most clear last night was that Latino communities must keep fighting if we are to create an economy that works for everyone, create more jobs with higher wages, and ensure every American has the opportunity get ahead and stay ahead.
