AmeriCorps VISTA Opportunity

NALCAB is currently seeking members who are interested in serving as a VISTA tenant organizing site as part of a national AmeriCorps VISTA project targeting HUD multi-family housing. VISTA members are provided a living allowance and additional benefits to include health care, childcare, end of service awards, and personal leave.

NALCAB serves as the sponsor for the VISTA Affordable Housing Preservation Project (VAHPP) that supports tenant organizing and efforts towards the elimination of poverty. The program aims to create and/or strengthen tenant organizations at Certain HUD Project Based Section-8 properties.  Eligible properties include Project-Based Section 8 contracts expiring within five (5) years; properties with a REAC physical inspection score less than 60; or property is otherwise at risk of abatement due to health and safety issues.

In the programs first year, members located in 10 cities throughout the US provided 22 tenant associations with capacity building services. Members are trained to support the needs of tenants by providing information to assist with housing preservation concerns as we lift families out of poverty. VISTA members facilitate tenant meetings and provide information about tenant rights, responsibilities, and housing options in eligible Project Based Section-8 properties.

Year 2 of the program begins January 16, 2022.

If you are interested in learning more about the VAHPP program, eligible properties, or becoming a host site and supervising a VISTA to help grow tenant organizing throughout our communities, please contact NALCAB staff.
