Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight | Centro Cultural

Latinos bring vitality and innovation to local economies nationwide. This Hispanic Heritage Month, NALCAB is celebrating that impact by spotlighting the voices of our members and the communities they serve.

NALCAB: What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to your organization?

At Centro Cultural, Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate our culture. This year especially, it’s a time to lean into the recognition of the resilience, contributions, and leadership of Latino communities across generations. For us, it is a time to honor the stories of immigrants, workers, artists, leaders, and families who continue to contribute to and shape Oregon and the nation, while also reaffirming our commitment to unity, belonging, and overcoming hate and fear. It reminds us that our heritage is not just history; it is living, evolving, and inspiring our legacy every day.

NALCAB: How does our organization celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month?

We celebrate by centering community joy and pride. This means uplifting Latino voices through cultural events, art, music, and food, as well as creating space for reflection, dialogue, and advocacy. This year we have had to adjust the ways in which we move and bring people together; centering our community members’ safety through a trauma-informed lens.

Nevertheless, our programming and celebrations highlight the diversity within the Latino community by honoring Indigenous, Afro-Latino, immigrant, and multigenerational experiences. Whether through partnerships, cultural showcases, or community support, we celebrate by bringing people together to learn, honor, and imagine a shared future rooted in dignity and justice.

NALCAB: What advice would we share to the next generation of Latino leaders in community development and nonprofit work?

To the next generation of Latino leaders: know that your story, your roots, and your voice are powerful tools for change. Lead with courage, authenticity, and community at the center. Remember that building a future of opportunity is a collective effort that no one person or organization can lead alone. Invest in relationships, seek mentors, and always lift others as you rise. Your leadership is vital not only for Latino communities but for the future of our counties, state, and country. Step boldly into the work, knowing you stand on the shoulders of those who came before, and that generations to come will stand on yours.
