For Chris Sherman, supporting NALCAB’s capital campaign is about more than a new home—it’s about building the infrastructure needed to expand opportunity in communities across the country.

Chris Sherman joined NALCAB’s Capital Campaign Committee because he has seen firsthand how access to capital can change the trajectory of a city.
That belief is shared by both Sherman and PNC, where he works: strong communities drive strong outcomes. It’s a philosophy that has shaped PNC’s long-standing support of NALCAB and is one of the reasons Sherman was eager to become involved in the organization’s capital campaign.
“For me, NALCAB aligns with both my personal philosophy and PNC’s,” Sherman says. “It aligns with what I’m passionate about.”
More Than a Building
NALCAB’s Roots of Resilience capital campaign will transform the historic former Westside Bank building in downtown San Antonio into a permanent home for the organization.
But for Sherman, the campaign represents something much bigger than bricks and mortar.
“This campaign is about investing in infrastructure of opportunity,” he says. “It’s not just a new building. It’s a platform that enables NALCAB to expand its reach and deepen its impact in often-overlooked communities.”
That vision is also why PNC is supporting the campaign—and why Sherman and his wife have chosen to make personal contributions.
NALCAB’s work demonstrates what can happen when capital is intentionally directed toward communities that have historically been underserved. Through its network of more than 200 organizations across the country, NALCAB helps community-based organizations access the resources, knowledge, and capital they need to create economic opportunity where it is needed most.
For Sherman, investing in that work means investing in the long-term prosperity of communities.
A Moment of Opportunity for San Antonio
Sherman sees the campaign coming at an important moment for San Antonio.
“San Antonio is at an inflection point,” he says.
At the same time, communities across the country are demanding economic development models that are proven, scalable, and capable of reaching people and places that have too often been overlooked.
NALCAB’s new home can help position San Antonio as a hub for that work—while giving NALCAB the infrastructure to respond to growing demand nationally.
“Twenty years from now, I hope San Antonio is recognized as a national model for economic growth, where prosperity is broad-based and opportunity is accessible to everyone,” Sherman says.
He sees NALCAB playing an important role in making that vision possible.
From its new location, NALCAB can serve as a place to convene leaders, build capacity, and share best practices nationwide—connecting the lessons and innovations emerging from San Antonio and communities across the country.
Shaping How Capital Reaches Communities
Sherman’s vision for NALCAB extends well beyond San Antonio.
“Long-term, I see NALCAB as a defining institution in the community development ecosystem—one that shapes how capital flows into underserved communities across the country,” he says.
That vision reflects why PNC has been a longtime NALCAB supporter, engaging with the organization through its community development banking work and its presence in San Antonio.
As a national financial institution, Sherman believes PNC has a responsibility to partner with strong community organizations to help create prosperity in the places where people live and work.
“NALCAB embodies that mission both locally and nationally,” he says.
The Roots of Resilience campaign builds on shared commitment. By investing in NALCAB’s future, supporters are helping create more than a permanent home. They are investing in the infrastructure, relationships, and capacity needed to move capital toward opportunity—and helping position San Antonio to play an even greater role in shaping what community development can look like nationwide.
This is an investment in a building. But more importantly, it’s an investment in what that building will make possible.
