Irene Chavez is NALCAB’s Director of Training and Leadership Development. She directs the Pete Garcia Community Economic Development Fellowship for mid-level managers, a program that  trains and mentors new and emerging Latino leaders in personal leadership development and nonprofit management. Irene also directs staff development for NALCAB and leads technical assistance and training efforts for organizations serving primarily Latino communities. She brings more than 18 years of experience in communication, small business development, and economic development.

Prior to joining NALCAB, Irene was the first Executive Director of the Maestro Entrepreneur Center; a non-profit center that houses a culinary incubator, business incubator and provides specialized programming created to assist existing small, minority, woman and veteran-owned businesses. She established collaborative efforts with community groups, funders, political leaders, and other organizations to successfully achieve the goals of the organization. While working for the City of San Antonio’s Economic Development Department, she was named one of the San Antonio Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 Rising Stars. She has also been honored with the North Chamber of Commerce’s Athena Young Professional Leadership Award and the SBA Small Business Champion of the Year.

Irene currently serves on board of directors for the Cesar E. Chavez Legacy and Educational Foundation. She is also the District 7 appointee for the City of San Antonio’s Small Business Advocacy Committee. She holds a bachelor’s degree in speech communication and MBA from St. Mary’s University.
