White House Names NALCAB Board Member Champion Of Change

Congratulations go to Rose Garcia, Executive Director at Tierra del Sol Housing Corporation (TDS) and NALCAB Board member who was selected out of 200+ nominees to be one of ten Champions of Change. This award is part of President Obama’s “Winning the Future” initiative. NALCAB nominated Rose for this award and received official notice on March 19, 2012.
The White House will honor Rose and other leaders who, like Cesar Chavez, have dedicated themselves to improving the lives of others throughout their community and across the nation. Rose will also have the opportunity to tour the White House. Below is an excerpt from the nomination application:
“Rose M. Garcia is a true Champion of Change. She has devoted her entire life/career toward improving living conditions in the most impoverished communities along the border region of Southern New Mexico and West Texas. Ms. Garcia is a humble servant and carries out her duties, without calling too much attention to her daily sacrifices. After 40+ years of service, I believe that the Cesar Chavez' Life and Legacy Award would be a well deserved honor for Ms. Garcia.”
Send your congratulations to Rose at rgarcia@tierradelsolhousing.org.

NSP2 Funds Help Contreras Family Become First Time Homeowners
by Erica Gonzalez, Tierra del Sol Housing Corporation

Debbie and Jorge Contreras have been together for 14 years. All their life they had been renting and thought homeownership was out of their reach. Ms. Contreras is a substitute teacher and Jorge owns his own tile company. (Pictured above: New homeowners through the Neighborhood Stabilization Program 2, Debbie, her husband Jorge and their two daughters Ashley and Marquix Contreras.)
It was after receiving a notification from HUD about homeownership possibilities that Ms. Contreras decided to go to El Paso Affordable Housing and find out what was available. Even after Ms. Contreras filled out the paperwork, she was still hesitant and didn’t believe that she would ever be a homeowner. On December 27, 2011 Mr. and Ms. Contreras signed their purchase contract and since that day they say they have not been able to stop smiling.
Attaining the American dream has provided the Contreras family “the opportunity to have a secure home for their family and encourage them to keep working hard to pay their home," said Ms. Contreras. Mr. and Ms. Contreras have already begun to refer people and encourage them to reach the American dream. Their home is a symbol of their success, generally through hard work.
